Manual Lymphatic Drainage & Post Surgery Recovery

Following a cosmetic surgical procedure, patients can experience array of different symptoms, this is why plastic surgeons highly recommend Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) especially when multiple procedures have been completed at once. Symptoms can occur because the flow of lymph can be interrupted by the surgery, which can result in reduced healing, fibrosis (scar tissue, dimpled, uneven skin and the possibility of developing seromas (pockets of serous fluid) as well as bruising and swelling.

What does The Lymphatic System do?

When having a cosmetic procedure its best to know a little about the healing process and what role the lymphatic system plays in your healing process. The lymphatic system is an essential part of the body's immune and circulatory systems. It consists of a network of lymphatic vessels that runs throughout the body and connects to larger lymph nodes.

Here are its main functions:

Removal of Toxins and Waste

The lymphatic system helps to cleanse the body by removing toxins, waste, and other unwanted materials from tissues.

Transport of Lymph

It transports lymph, a fluid rich in white blood cells, throughout the body. This fluid plays a critical role in the immune response by helping to fight infections.

Support of Immune Function

By circulating white blood cells, the lymphatic system helps the body detect and combat pathogens.

What is Manual Lymphatic Drainage?

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) originated in the 1930s, developed by Dr. Emil Vodder and his wife, Estrid Vodder. The Vodders, who were working as physical therapists on the French Riviera, created MLD to help treat patients with chronic colds. They noticed that many of their patients had swollen lymph nodes, and through their pioneering work, they developed a gentle, rhythmic massage technique aimed at stimulating the lymphatic system and promoting the flow of lymph. Their method proved effective and has since become widely recognized and utilized in various therapeutic and medical fields, particularly for post-operative care and chronic conditions involving the lymphatic system.

A lymph drainage massage, uses a series of gliding, compressing and stretching motions over the client’s body. The different rhythmic movements used stimulate the lymphatic system without compressing the vessels. This allows the lymph to move easily through the tissues and lymph nodes. MLD follows a specific sequence over the body so lymph isn’t trapped anywhere, making sure every area is treated with care.

Benefits of Post op Lymphatic Drainage

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a specialized massage technique that offers several benefits during the recovery phase of a liposculpture procedure.

Here are the key advantages:

  1. Accelerates Recovery: MLD promotes the removal of cellular debris, excess fluids and toxins from the body, thereby speeding up the healing process, reducing inflammation and decreasing the risk of infection.
  2. Reduces Irregularities: By encouraging even fluid distribution, MLD minimizes the chances of developing irregularities, lumps, or bumps in the treated areas.
  3. Prevents Scar Tissue Formation: The gentle massage technique helps in reducing inflammation and prevents the build-up of fibrous tissue, which can lead to scar formation.
  4. Enhances Cosmetic Outcome: By aiding the skin in tightening and conforming to the new body contours, MLD ensures a smoother, more refined final appearance. Overall, MLD is an effective post-operative treatment that supports optimal healing and enhances the aesthetic results of liposculpture
