C-Section Recovery
Support your body after birth with care, understanding & guidance
Becoming a mother is life-changing; physically, emotionally, and hormonally. Yet despite the strength it requires, many women leave the surgical recovery period with very little practical support.
At The Nava Room, I provide gentle, thoughtful recovery care designed specifically for women after a C-section. My aim is not just to help you feel more comfortable, but to support your body in healing well, reducing tension, improving movement, encouraging circulation, and helping you feel more like you again.
My approach to C-section recovery combines gentle lymphatic drainage massage with light, supportive massage techniques designed to encourage circulation, ease tension, and support the body’s natural healing process. Drawing on my background in sports massage and personal training, I may also introduce simple, appropriate exercises when your body is ready. These are designed to help reintroduce movement, strengthen gently, and support healthy muscle connection as you recover, which can play a role in reducing tension and supporting the abdomen as the body heals, helping to minimise the likelihood of a “mummy pouch” forming over time. Every session is guided by careful assessment and an understanding that healing happens in stages, with techniques and exercises introduced only when appropriate for you.
How does the "Mummy Pouch" Form?
During a C-section, the abdominal wall, connective tissue (fascia), and skin are stretched and surgically separated. As the body heals, it naturally forms scar tissue and may retain fluid and tension in the lower abdomen as a protective response. If circulation is reduced and the deeper abdominal muscles, including the muscles affected by separation, struggle to reconnect, this area can remain weak or unsupported, contributing to the drooping or pouch-like appearance many women notice. Using gentle, effective massage techniques alongside appropriate exercises to support muscle reconnection can help encourage healthier healing patterns and support the abdomen as it recovers; while this cannot be guaranteed to prevent a “mummy pouch,” it supports many of the key factors involved in optimal recovery.
Massage
Gentle massage techniques can help ease tightness and swelling around the surrounding tissues, encourage circulation, and reduce feelings of restriction as the area heals.
Gentle Exercises
Gradual exercises, introduced when the body is ready, can help rebuild core strength, encourage healthy muscle connection, and support the abdomen as it recovers, which may help reduce the likelihood of a “mummy pouch” forming over time.
Scar Massage
Targeted scar massage can help soften dense tissue, improve mobility, and reduce sensations of hardness, bumpiness, or indentation around the scar area.
What you might not know about your C-Section?
A C-section is major abdominal surgery, even when it’s planned. Your body has:
• been cut through multiple layers of muscle and fascia
• undergone separation of tissue to deliver your baby
• experienced shifts in posture, tension, and core support
• changes in circulation and lymphatic flow
And yet most women are told:
“Rest for a few weeks and you’ll be fine.”
This leaves many feeling:
tense in the neck, shoulders or back
unsupported around the incision
uncomfortable when moving, lifting or sitting
worried about swelling or scar tightness
anxious about a “mummy pouch” forming
This isn’t just physical, it affects confidence, sleep, and daily movement.
Your body deserves intentional care.
How my treatments help with C-Section recovery.
While this is not medical treatment, supportive manual therapy can:
- Encourage gentle lymphatic flow
Reducing fluid build-up, swelling and discomfort around the abdomen and pelvic area.
2. Support postural tension release
The muscles around the neck, shoulders, lower back and pelvis often tighten to compensate after surgery and birth.
3. Promote comfort and mobility
Helping you move more comfortably when lifting, feeding, walking or resting.
4. Support abdominal fascia & scar care
With safe, gentle touch when your body is ready, scar tissue can begin to soften over time, not forced, but supported.
5. Help you feel more confident in your body
Recovery isn’t just physical, feeling supported and understood matters.
Every body heals differently, and every woman deserves care that meets her where she is.
FAQS
When should I start treatment?
This varies from person to person.
Many women begin supportive work:
✔ once cleared by their surgeon
✔ when swelling has reduced
✔ when light bodywork feels safe and comfortable
Some start in the weeks after surgery, others a bit later, there’s no single “perfect” timeline. What matters most is listening to your body and respecting its pace of healing.
(If you’re unsure what’s appropriate for you right now, give me a call and we can talk it through.)
What to expect in a session
Your comfort and safety come first.
When you arrive:
- We talk about where you are in your recovery
- You share what’s comfortable and what isn’t
- I tailor the session to your healing stage
Sessions may include:
✔ gentle lymphatic support
✔ soft fascial release
✔ upper body, neck + shoulder tension relief
✔ guided relaxation techniques
✔ awareness of how your body moves post-birth
You are always in control of what feels right in the moment, nothing is rushed or aggressive.
Is it too late to get support if my C-Section was years ago?
Yes, many women seek support months or even years after a C-section.
While early recovery care can be helpful, the body continues to adapt and respond to gentle, appropriate support long after surgery. Persistent tightness, discomfort, reduced movement, or a feeling that the abdomen “doesn’t quite feel the same” are common experiences.
With careful assessment, supportive massage techniques and gentle movement guidance can still help improve comfort, mobility, and body awareness, regardless of how long ago your C-section was.
